Tsunami 2004 in Thailand: Exactly 10 years ago on December 26, 2004 there was a devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean. Thailand was also badly affected by the tidal waves.

Today is the 10th anniversary of the massive earthquake that struck off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The third strongest earthquake ever recorded (also known as the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake) triggered a whole series of tsunamis on the coasts of numerous countries in the Indian Ocean.

A total of around 230,000 people died, around 165,000 of them in Indonesia alone.

Thailand: Tsunami 2004

In Thailand, the touristic coast on the Andaman Sea was particularly affected by the tidal waves, especially the holiday centers of Khao Lak and Phuket and the island of Ko Phi Phi.

407 villages were flooded, 47 of which were completely destroyed. The death toll in Thailand is estimated at over 8,000, including about a third foreign tourists.
